Science year „Seas and Oceans“ opened

The 2^nd “Baltic Sea Day” was the first major event after the official opening of the German science year of the “Seas and Oceans” on June 7^th by Federal minister Wanka. Events will run for 16 months and provide various activities around our seas.

Following the great success of the Baltic Sea day 2014, the four main German research institutions involved in Baltic Sea research (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, the German Maritime Museum, the Leibniz Institute of Baltic Sea Research and the Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries) presented their work to a wider public. Their research builds the scientific basis for a sensible marine policy.

The Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries mainly provided information on the state of the cod stocks in the Baltic, and all kind of research required to determine this. Three research vessels, the “Solea", "Deneb" and "Elisabeth Mann Borgese" were open to visitors for the whole day and attracted many.

During the day, the winners of a school competition on small inhabitants of the Baltic Sea could present their contributions. The winning groups will spend a project day in one of the organising institutions – we will be visited soon by a project group of the Christliche Münsterschule Bad Doberan.
