CD-REDD2: Capacity Development for forest-related Greenhouse Gas Inventories
The selected countries should have the capacity to develop and report national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories by December 2012. This project will allow all participating developing countries to compile a GHG Inventory following the IPCC Tier1 approach. In the near future, in combination with the monitoring systems under development, countries will be able to compile GHG Inventories also at IPCC Tier2 or Tier3 levels.
There will be workshops and trainings on global, national and regional scale on general aspects of GHG inventory preparation and on country-specific issues related to developing a complete GHG inventory. This is a basic prerequisite to ensure a prompt start and a full integration of developing countries in the REDD+ mechanism. The project’s capacity-building approach to develop GHG inventories will be based on the lessons learnt from previous activities carried out by other technical cooperation agencies (e.g., USA-EPA, UN-REDD, UNDP, GIZ etc) and supervised by the UNFCCC Secretariat. It will also build on experiences and approaches to support countries in international reporting processes. Furthermore additional developing countries can participate in the project at any time to develop their own country-specific methodologies.
The project is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and carried out in collaboration with the Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN).
