Becoming and being a professor in Bremerhaven - Subproject: "Cooperation professorship at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences with the Thünen Institute"

BeProf@BHV enables research-oriented professorship structures for young researchers and strengthens local cooperation between Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the Thünen Institute.

Background and Objective

In order to improve the recruitment and development of professorial staff, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has initiated the BeProf@BHV project. Building on the BeProf@BHV concept, the scientific objective of this sub-project is to test new structures, development opportunities and career paths for professorial staff.

Target Group

The project is aimed at all those who want to qualify for a professorship and maintain a research focus at the same time. As this is often only possible to a limited extent at Universities of Applied Sciences, the aim is to increase the number of possible personnel and improve their recruitment. Furthermore, this project gives the Thünen Institute and Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences the opportunity to intensify and expand existing links and to tap into new potential for cooperation.

Approach

The expansion of a research oriented professorship at the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with a scientific institution increases the attractiveness of the positions and enlarges the pool of applicants for advertised professorships, especially for the STEM programms. The number of applicants is not only low at the University, but also at cooperating research institutes, such as the Thünen Institute and positions more and more can not be filled.

The funding opportunity for cooperation professorships created by BeProf@BHV gives both cooperation partners, the University and the Thünen Institute, the opportunity to offer a more attractive position for both sides. The Thünen Institute, as a research institution providing policy advice, can thus offer young researchers the special, additional qualification option of a professorship at a University of Applied Science and thus open up attractive career paths both in the academic field and at the research institution. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has the option of filling a professorship with a strong research focus and intensifying cooperation with the Thünen Institute as a research partner.

The research will be carried out independently of the cooperation project at the Thünen Institute in the "Marine Living Resources" working group and is part of the existing research portfolio. Here, the effects of marine protected areas and offshore wind energy expansion on marine resources and their sustainable use in the North Sea are to be investigated by means of ecosystem modeling. The subject area offers the possibility of comprehensive integration into the Biotechnology of Marine Resources course at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and promotes the integration of new fisheries biology research results into existing teaching.

Our Research Questions

One of the aims of the cooperative professorship is to intensify the cooperation between Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the Thünen Institute. In addition to incorporating the latest findings in fisheries science into teaching, students will also be given the opportunity to write their thesis and gain practical experience at the Thünen Institute, thus facilitating access to regional, national and international research networks.
