Have you ever wondered about the link between an innovative shrimp peeling machine and the added value it brings to a local region, all while enjoying a tasty bite of a delicious shrimp roll? Dr. Sarah Simons  unveils this fascinating relationship in the video.

By developing a machine that peels North Sea shrimp both gently and efficiently, the aim is to enhance the local economy and to promote a truly regional product. Currently, the majority of these shrimp are transported to North Africa to be manually peeled, only to be shipped back thousands of miles. This initiative seeks to revitalize local industry and reduce unnecessary transportation.

Dr. Simons, leading the Economic research unit at the Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries, plays a vital role in advising on conservation and sustainable use of living resources. The German shrimp fishery, characterized by its cultural heritage and the romance of of traditional boats and harbours, stands as a crucial sector in the German fisheries.

For Dr. Sarah Simons, Bremerhaven is a city full of surprises, continuously evolving and innovating. She is especially excited about the upcoming Science Campus, poised to foster a synergy between the city’s excellence and industrial collaboration.

To explore why the Weser estuary is a magnet for brilliant minds and what other innovations are on the horizon, watch the additional videos of this campaign at BREMERHAVEN: Your new science HOME city.

These videos delve into the future of German shrimp fishing, the development of green methanol, hydrogen applications, improving visibility in muddy waters for sea rescue, climate dynamics modelling and other exciting topics.

This video series is a collaborative effort by Tim David Müller-Ziztke and Dennis Vogt, commissioned by BIS - Wirtschaftsförderung Bremerhaven in partnership with the Department for Economy, Tourism and Science of the City of Bremerhaven. Many thanks to everyone who contributed their creative vision and hard work to showcase and promote the unique strengths of Bremerhaven.
