Emissions from wood products
Wood emits volatile organic compounds (VOC), because it contains substances, which are volatile at standard ambient conditions. This is of major importance due to the fact that building products are regulated on national and international level regarding their release of volatiles.
Some mechanisms of the formation, release and toxicology of VOC from wood products are not finally elucidated. But the understanding of these relationships is most relevant for advice of applications or for potential strategies of VOC-reduction.
Some fundamental research work of the Thünen Institute of Wood Research could contribute to the understanding of volatiles from wood and wood-based panels. Further research is necessary regarding the actual effect of the use of wood as a construction material onto the indoor air quality.
