ITMS - Module Sources & Sinks - Joint Research Project Agri-For-Live - Modelling of GHG Emissions from Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock in Germany - Sub-Project 2: Generation and Compilation of Activity Data in High Spatial and Temporal Resolution for the Sector Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock

In order to improve the comparison to the dynamics of measure GHG concentrations in the atmosphere, emission models need to be improved regarding their spatial and temporal resolution.

Background and Objective

An integrated GHG monitoring system for Germany is currently being established. It aims at monitoring sources and sinks of GHGs in Germany based on observation data from the atmosphere and thereby verifying the national reporting independently. For this comparison it is necessary to improve emission models by enabling representation of subannual dynamics and by improving spatial resolution. The project "Agri-For-Live" contributes to this by demonstrating how improved models with more differentiated input data can contribute to this. For this purpose, the Thünen Institute extends its reporting models and improves the regionalization and temporal resolution of the emission modelling.

Approach

The reporting model for German agriculture (GAS-EM) is extended with:

  • modelling of manure transports based on available data from federal states
  • modelling of the timing of fertilization events and based on that of the stored amounts of manure
  • weather-dependent modelling of emissions over the course of the year

For the forestry sector, process models are tested, adapted and calibrated to better represent the dynamics of CO2 sources and sinks.
