An Alliance for the Climate – Dialogue on climate and agriculture between New Zealand and Germany (AgriDENZ)

AgriDENZ aims to foster mutual learning between Germany, New Zealand and countries in the Global South on climate-resilient and climate friendly agricultural practices, and advance policy and research exchanges.

Background and Objective

Overall goal:
Advance low-emission and climate-resilient agricultural and food systems

Project goal:
Intensify the mutual exchange of experiences and cooperation between New Zealand and Germany to develop solutions for the global climate impact of/on agricultural production systems.

Knowledge exchange within and between the German and New Zealand scientific communities and knowledge exchange at the interface between research, policy and practice is essential for the implementation of climate-friendly solutions. The dynamic contexts, complexities and local specificities of the current climate-related challenges facing agriculture require more inclusive, flexible mechanisms to guide the generation, integration and exchange of knowledge and the development of practical solutions.
This project, which is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), will contribute to developing these mechanisms.

Therefore, the project focusses on three result areas:

  1. Strengthening the scientific exchange between research institutions
  2. Establishing a (science-)policy dialogue on priority sub-topics
  3. Fostering exchange with third countries (particularly in the Global South)

Approach

Together with the New Zealand partners and other experts from Germany, Europe and international organizations, science-based solutions for an efficient agricultural climate change policy will be developed, compared and evaluated. Various formats will be used as part of the project, including regular working group meetings within the project team, thematic workshops and events, joint scientific analyses and studies, as well as visits for in-depth exchange. This will then also be discussed and further advanced beyond the project partners with relevant persons from third countries and multipliers from the agricultural and food industry.
