Project
More bioenergy from wood
Improving eucalyptus and poplar wood properties for bioenergy
The KBBE-Project TreeForJoules aims at finding new ways for wood production, optimized for the generation of highly efficient fuels. The Thünen Institute of Wood Research is involved in the characterization of the cell wall components and the estimation of bioenergy potential.
Background and Objective
The lignin content in the wood of fast growing wood species should be reduced to increase the carbohydrate content and thus the potential for bioethanol production.
Approach
The carbohydrate analysis is performed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after acid hydrolysis of the cell wall. After a steam treatment we estimate the enzymatic accessibility. Anylytical and mini-fast pyrolyses help to study the amount and compositon of the bio-oils.
Our Research Questions
Is it possible to reduce the lignin content by genetical modification to obtain more carbohydrates for the production of bioethanol?
