Eco labelling
Sustainability certification is an approach that aims to involve consumers and trade and create the right incentives for voluntary measures to make fisheries more sustainable by changing purchasing behaviour.
The Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries has been involved at several levels in the development, assessment and implementation of sustainability standards for wild fish for almost 10 years: In an EU working group to define minimum standards, in the steering group of the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) to compare ("benchmark") different standards, and especially in the further development of the world's leading standard, that of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
