Research

Science and research is the basis of our advice. We either conduct scientific groundwork, where we try to anticipate which topics will become relevant in the next years and intensify our activities there. Or we try to address fundamental ecological questions in relation to commercially explotied fish stocks, and mainly use our long data series to address these questions. Sometimes we conduct smaller projects directly commissioned by the governement, fishery or associations to address questions in the short term.

Living Marine Resources

Fundamental knowledge on the ecology and productivity of fish stocks is the basis for a sustainable use of marine living ressources, as is data on the distribution, removals , and an appropriate modelling framework.

Reproduction Biology

Many wild fish stocks are characterised by an extreme variability of recruitment. This is an adaptation to variable environmental conditions. A better understanding of the mechanisms of recruitment will help us to ensure a sustainable exploitation of marine fish.

Fisheries and Survey Technology

Each fishing activity will have an impact on the environment, but we can try to reduce this ecological impact as far as possible. At the same time, a fishery needs to be economically sustainable. Technical innovations can play an important role in achieving these goals.

Fisheries Management

The Baltic Sea is an ideal region to test different approaches to fisheries management, because the structures of the ecosystem and the fisheries are comparatively simple.
