Chair of various scientific committees and working groups of ICES.

1995 - 2003: Senior scientist of the Federal Research Centre of Fisheries and head of the pelagic working group of the Institute of Sea Fishery in Hamburg. Member and chair of different working groups and committees of ICES. Associate professor at the University of Hamburg, Institute for Hydrobiology and Fishery Sciences. Cruise leader of research cruises with research vessels.
1989 - 1995: Assistant Professor at der University of Hamburg, Institute for Hydrobiology and Fishery Sciences. Invited professor to Manaus/Brazil. Consultant for the GTZ und „Brot für die Welt“. Habilitation on Boienergetics and swim physiology of fish.
1988: Project manager for GTZ
1985 - 02/1988: Dissertation (Dr. rer. nat.) at the University of Hamburg, Institute for Hydrobiology and Fishery Sciences on biochemical ageing processes in fish.
1982 - 1985: Project assistant and later senior expert for fishery biology at the GTZ at the University of the Philippines, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines.
1981 - 1982: Compulsory community service (Zivildienst)
