Throughfall

The precipitation that is made up of rain that falls through gaps in the canopy or is intercepted by needles or leaves and then drips from the foliage is both called throughfall. The throughfall is collected in precipitation collectors (bulk collectors or collecting channels), which are installed under the canopy. The throughfall is used, for example, to calculate total stand precipitation together with the stemflow.
