Litterfall

The litterfall samples are used to record the weight and chemical composition of the falling fruits, leaves, and twigs. This is an important aspect of forest nutrient cycles and humus formation as well as for the assessment of the regeneration capacity of tree species. Furthermore, regularly occurring mast years, i.e. years with a high occurrence of fruits of e.g. beech and oak, are recorded. These are required to assess the carbon balance of forest ecosystems.
