The European Forest Accounts are prepared by the Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics on behalf of the German Federal Statistical Office. They show the resource forest and its product wood from the area over the physical stock, its value and uses, up to the processing of the wood in the timber industry.
Until 2013, these tables were derived from Eurostats standard set of "European Framework for Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting for Forests" (IEEAF). In 2014, the Eurostat table frame was changed to the European Forest Accounts (EFA).
The EFA consists of a total of ten tables, which are listed in the following table. The first four tables list the assets forest area (physical and monetary) and timber stock (physical and monetary). Tables B 1 to B 3b supplement the assets tables with economic data. Tables C 1a and C 1b contain data on the material flow of the wood.
Table no. | Table name |
ASSETS | |
A 1a | Area of wooded land, in 1000 ha |
A 1b | Area of wooded land, in million national currency |
A 2a | Timber on wooded land, in 1000 m³ over bark |
A 2b | Timber on wooded land, in million national currency |
ECONOMIC DATA | |
B 1 | Economic aggregates of the forestry and logging industry (excluding other industries), in million national currency (extended Economic Accounts for Forestry) |
B 2 | Output of the forest and logging industry by type |
B 3a | Supply of wood in the rough by all industries, in million national currency |
B 3b | Use of wood in the rough by all industries, in million national currency |
MATERIAL FLOW | |
C 1a | Supply of wood in the rough by all industries, in 1000 m³ over bark |
C 1b | Use of wood in the rough by all industries, in 1000 m³ over bark |
The results of the EFA, are reported annually and voluntarily to Eurostat by the EU and EFTA states. They form the basis of forest reporting in the Environmental Economic Accounts and are also used for calculating the National Accounts. For the EU and EFTA states, the tables provide an overview of natural forest development, the structure and value added in the forestry and timber industries based on natural production and on selected environmental aspects.
