The “Regional Science Association International” is one of the oldest and largest international organisations bringing together regional scientists. At its annual meeting in Kecskemét, Hungary, Damiaan Persyn presented his latest research on the statistical analysis of long-term changes in the spatial distribution of the population, from the paper “Life at the edge of the city size distribution” (joint work with Christian Hundt). In this paper, historic data starting from 1871 on the population of German municipalities is used to analyse the statistical properties of population growth and changes therein, as well as estimating trends in the spatial distribution of population.
