Background

This Summer School hosted by the Thünen Institute of Market Analysis is a core activity of the Food Security research program from the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, German Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries.

Aims of the Summer School

Improving knowledge of participants about agricultural economics and quantitative modelling of agriculture. Learn the methodology to develope agricultural market models for African and other developing countries using the AGMEMOD structure. AGMEMOD is a scientific tool applied to evaluate agricultural market developments caused by agricultural policies, farming decisions and the environment. Learning how to work with AGMEMOD to develop a new country model, as well as the use of the model and its required software.

Structure

The Summer School will start on Monday 8th at 9:00 o’clock with an introduction into AGMEMOD, focusing on the economic structure. From Tuesday 9th to Wednesday 10th August 2016, the sessions will concentrate on presenting a previously developed model for Rwanda as an academic example. From Thursday 11th to Friday 12th August the participants of the summer school will develop together with the instructors a synthetic model for two selected countries. Agricultural market structure and model results for the two countries will be evaluated in detail by exploring diverse scientific questions on the likely developments of agricultural markets.

Participants will work in small groups (4 – 6 people) supervised by a trainer.
