Nele Schmitz was invited to give a key-note presentation at a seminar on circular economy, organized by the Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH in St. Veit an der Glan on October 3. It was the Thünen Report that caught the attention of scientific director Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Gindl-Altmutter. After the general introduction into the topic by Dr. Schmitz, researchers from the three Austrian-based sites of the centre presented a wide spectrum of innovative themes.
Amazingly useful inherent capacities of wood were brought to our attention. Wood processing effluents have the power to be re-used to lower the VOC emissions of engineered wood. At end-of-life, insulation material made of newspapers was found to be an excellent resource to produce plant fertilizer. Smartly using fungi, wood shavings can be turned into Styrofoam.
Just to name a few.The circular bio-economy has the potential to incite innovations towards a full valorisation of the assets of wood.
