In the film, renowned experts from the scientific community describe the contribution wood can make to the development from a fossil-based economy to a biobased economy and the challenges associated with the cascade use of wood. "The task we set ourselves as wood scientists is to keep the period of material use before combustion as long as possible," says Dr. Jan Lüdtke from the Thünen Institute for Wood Research. The advantage is that the carbon in the wood remains stored beyond a tree's lifetime in wood products that can be used as long and as many times as possible. This contributes to security of supply and resource efficiency as well as to climate and environmental protection and value creation in the forestry and timber cluster.
The video report takes interested parties on a journey into the diverse possibilities of efficient wood use: from timber harvesting to processing in the sawmill, paper and pulp industries, as well as in the chemical industry, to timber construction, recycling of waste wood and finally to processing into wood-based materials. In seven contributions on the individual cascade stages, wood experts explain how wood can be used and processed in a resource-saving way and what role by-products of the wood-processing industries - such as sawdust and wood chips - and recycled waste wood play in wood processing. "Transformation, climate change, the energy turnaround - these are all issues in which the cascading use of wood can play a role," says Anemon Strohmeyer, Chair of the Charter for Wood's Working Group on Material and Energy Efficiency.
The 45-minute video report is a project of the Charter for Wood 2.0. The report is available on the FNR YouTube channel and in the FNR media library.
