Forest and wood research faces major challenges in finding answers to significant questions on the topics of climate and resource protection, resource consumption and sustainable added value of wood, our most important renewable material.
The researchers of the Thünen Institute of Wood Research (about 60 employees) as well as other organizations on the campus (Thünen Institute for Forestry, Thünen Centre of Competence on the Origin of Timber, Institute of Wood Sciences of the University of Hamburg) develop solutions of the most important issues of the future. However, work is being carried out in outdated buildings from the 1960s and 70s that no longer meet the state of the art and some of it had already to be shut down for safety reasons.
The situation is not new, but plans for the redesign and development of the entire site are becoming more concrete. The sustainable design of the complex is to be carried out while preserving the large arboretum with its 1500 species of woody plants from all over the world.
