part-time with 65% regular working hours (currently 25.35 hours per week) to work on the third-party funded project CONMAR (CONcepts for conventional MArine Munition Remediation in the German North and Baltic Sea) Phase 2 in the 'Fish Diseases' working group.

CONMAR is a consortium that conducts research on marine dumped munition in the North and Baltic Seas. As part of CONMAR, the Thünen Institute for Fisheries Ecology is investigating the effects of munitions contamination on fish. Field investigations and laboratory studies are planned for this purpose. Possible contamination of fish with leaking munition compounds and consequences for fish health should be researched in situ in the field. The applicant should plan, organize and carry out fishing expeditions to munition dumping areas in the North and Baltic Seas together with the project management. The health status of the fish will be recorded on board and tissue samples will be collected for the analysis of residual munition compounds. Laboratory studies will be carried out to investigate the extent to which fish can be affected by food that contains munition compounds. The aim is to research the cytological and pathological effects of munition compounds on fish.

The tasks include:

  • sampling on research ships (e.g., Clupea, Solea)
  • dissection and examination of fish on board
  • planning and conducting laboratory experiments with isolated fish cells and live fish
  • creating primary cell cultures and measuring vital cell parameters
  • participation in project meetings and presentation of results
  • evaluation of the results and their publication in specialist journals

We expect:

  • completed scientific university studies (M.Sc., Univ. Diploma) in biology, marine biology, fisheries biology, biochemistry, veterinary medicine, environmental sciences or comparable qualification
  • willingness to pursue a doctorate
  • flexibility and willingness to participate in sea expeditions
  • willingness to carry out animal experiments with fish
  • strong cooperation and communication skills, motivation and the willingness to work independently
  • good knowledge of German and English, both spoken and written
  • confident use of statistics, spreadsheets, presentations and word processing software

We offer highly interesting work in applied research with practical and policy-relevant questions, the results of which also attract considerable public interest. You can expect a job in an interdisciplinary team with modern equipment.

The employment relationship is based on the provisions of the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD -Bund). The grouping takes place if the collective agreement and personal requirements are met according to pay group 13 TVöD.
