The Institute of Market Analysis of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Braunschweig is offering a position starting as soon as possible and limited until 31.10.2027 for a

Researcher (f/m/d)

(agricultural, social or economic sciences)

 to work in the Horizon Europe project BrightSpace. BrightSpace is a research project with 14 partners aiming to design effective and sustainable strategies to enable EU agriculture to navigate within a Safe and Just Operating Space (SJOS) despite the many challenges it faces.

The European Green Deal aims, among others, to increase the contribution of EU agriculture to climate change action, improve the management of natural resources, ensure a fair economic return for farmers, and reinforce the protection of biodiversity. As these objectives are interdependent, the Brightspace project aims to analyse their interaction. It is our ambition to involve political decision-makers and opinion leaders in this process in order to develop strategies for sustainable food systems within planetary boundaries.

The Institute for Market Analysis is particularly involved in the establishment of a BrightSpace Stakeholder Platform to incorporate the knowledge of experts and stakeholders in all phases of the project.

Tasks:

  • Scientific conceptualisation, planning, organisation and English moderation of multi-stakeholder seminars and other project events,
  • Producing minutes of these seminars,
  • Scientific evaluation of these seminars,
  • Development of scenarios based on the respective seminars, presentation of these scenarios and chairing discussions at follow-up seminars, taking into account the scientific state of the art,
  • Close collaboration and interaction with project partners and other international institutions,
  • Preparation, publication and presentation of the results for science, business, politics and the public in German and English.

Professional requirements profile

  • A university degree in economics or social sciences with a specialisation in agricultural and food economics or a comparable discipline; a PhD would be an advantage
  • Knowledge and experience in the implementation of multi-stakeholder approaches
  • Experience in leading and moderating groups and teams
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of qualitative methods (e.g. evaluation of group discussions or interviews) is an advantage
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of quantitative methods (e.g. analysing quantitative data sets) is an advantage
  • Knowledge of modelling approaches is an advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience in the management of scientific projects is an advantage

Personal requirements profile

  • Interest and excitement in working with different stakeholders in an international context
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Ability to lead, moderate and motivate large groups with diverse interests
  • Team player, interdisciplinary approach, strong co-operation skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and abroad (project meetings, conferences, etc.)
  • Written and oral communication skills to present issues to different audiences
  • Very good written and spoken German and English language skills
  • Ability to swiftly analyse complex issues

The employment relationship is governed by the provisions of the German Tariff Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund); the salary is according to remuneration group 13 TVöD.
