Job offer
research assistant (f/m/d) specialising in fisheries biology/marine biology
- Beteiligte Institute
- SFInstitut für Seefischerei
The Institute of Sea Fisheries of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forests and Fisheries, at the Bremerhaven site is looking for the following temporary full time position starting as soon as possible limited until 31.12.2027, subject to funding approval (and with the option to extend), a
research assistant (f/m/d)
specialising in fisheries biology/marine biology
as part of the project "Monitoring local and regional impacts of offshore wind farms on fisheries resources as a basis for sustainable marine spatial planning".
The Thünen Institute advises the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) on the implementation of the European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The aim of the pilot project is to obtain a basis for an assessment of the fisheries benefits of OWF in the southern North Sea with the help of innovative data collection and its application in models as well as national and international collaboration. The focus is on edible crab (Cancer pagurus), a species that is increasingly the subject of exploitation by fisheries. Existing catch data will be evaluated and new data on recruitment patterns and migration behaviour in and around wind farms in the southern North Sea will be collected. Data will be processed for their application in assessment models, if possible, analysed using various model applications. The resulting improved data basis is key to advice on spatial management approaches in the southern North Sea in order to reduce spatial use conflicts in the long term and promote sustainable resource use.
The candidate will support the collection and provision of additional data to enable the assessment of the impact of offshore wind turbines on fisheries resources in the North Sea.
The tasks include in particular
- support in the application, coordination, and implementation of experimental work in the wind farm and participation in surveys
- development and implementation of monitoring approaches to determine the density of crab larvae, colonisation rates of juveniles and mapping of suitable areas for juvenile animals
- preparation and implementation of monitoring approaches in relation to the migratory behaviour of crabs
- compilation and evaluation of available monitoring data and time series on a local and regional scale
- national and international collaboration (e.g. ICES) in relation to data collection and analysis
- Support of the project management in the reporting obligation, organisation of working meetings and workshops as well as communication of the results
Required qualifications
- completed university degree (Diploma or Master) or doctorate in marine biology, fisheries biology or comparable disciplines
- experience in coordinating and conducting experimental work at sea
- experience in data collection and analysis related to recruitment issues, such as larval identification
- experience in the application of acoustic tagging and data analysis
- experience in data analysis, use of databases and confident use of R and ArcGIS
- willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary project environment
- strong collaboration and communication skills and a proven publication background
