Solea, Cruise 847

Duration:  22 to 30 April 2025

Cruise area:  North Sea (priority jade estuary)

Purpose:  North Sea (priority jade estuary)

After the world wars, an estimated 1.3 million tonnes of munitions were dumped in German North Sea waters. Over time, the munitions corrode and release pollutants that may also be found in water samples and fish. As part of the BMBF DAMproject CONMAR-2 and for the "Munitionsscreening" of the Federal Conference of Environment Ministers, it is to be investigated whether water samples and fish are contaminated by old munitions.

Tasks:

  • Collecting water and fish samples, especially dab (Limanda limanda) in the vicinity of munitions dumping areas in the North Sea and in control areas.
  • Review of the findings from Solea 816 and 831
  • Collecting further samples in the 'Außen Jade' area to determine possible changes in environmental pollution with ammunition residues.
