Research interests
- Ecosystem based fisheries and marine management with emphasis on marine spatial planning and conflicts between fisheries and other uses and the marine ecosystems of the North Sea
- Development of integrated modelling approaches and decision support tools to both assess spatial management options and to support the implementation of an ecosystem based fisheries and marine management
- Development of spatial distribution models of marine resources and fisheries activities among others with the help of geostatistical methods and GIS
- Evaluation of marine spatial planning scenarios concerning fisheries and marine living resources
Assignments
- Offshore Site Selection for a sustainable and multi-functional use of marine areas in heavily utilized seas with the North Sea as an example (OSS)
- EU project: Preparatory Action on Maritime Spatial Planning in the North East Atlantic/North Sea/Channel Area (MASPNOSE)
- EU project: Interaction in coastal waters: A roadmap to sustainable integration of aquaculture and fisheries (COEXIST)
- EU project: Monitoring and evaluation of spatially managed areas (MESMA)

Working Groups and Committees
Working Group - Committee | Tasks |
---|---|
ICES | |
Working Group on Marine Spatial Planning and Coastal Zone Management (WGMPCZM) | The working group deals with the scientific basics (ecological, economical, socio-cultural) needed for a sustainable maritime spatial planning process. |
Working Group on Cumulative Effects Assessment Approaches in Management (WGCEAM) - Co-Chair | This working group is developing a flexible approach for the analysis and assessment of risks of cumulative effects on different ecosystem components. The working group is characterized by its interdisciplinary mode of operation. The developed approach will be tested in case studies. |
National Committees | |
Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH), Scientific "Begleitkreis" Maritime Spatial Planning | The scientific "Begleitkreis" gives the BSH advice on the adjustment and development of the Maritime Spatial Planning within the EEZ of the North- and Baltic Seas. |
