Fisheries

The Fisheries and Survey Technology working group at the Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries develops solutions for sustainable fishing. We focus on various topics, such as bycatch avoidance, marine litter from fishery sources, energy consumption and environmental impacts.

Fishing is not the same everywhere - there are many reasons for this: Naturally, various fishing gears, such as bottom trawls, gillnets, and fish traps, differ. But even with the same fishing gear, the conditions of fishing – and thus, in some cases, the challenges to be solved – can vary in different fishing grounds, marine areas, or seasons.

For this reason, it is not always possible to directly apply solutions found in other fisheries to a specific fishery. Therefore, you will find below fisheries for which the Fisheries and Survey Technology Working Group of the Thünen Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries develops solutions.
Fishing methods can be divided into passive and active fisheries.

Catch optimisation in the North Sea shrimp fishery

Shrimp fishing is currently the most valuable German coastal fishery. As it fishes with small-meshed nets at the seabed partly in ecologically sensitive areas, we are working on improving fishing methods.
