DCF (Data Collection Framework): Stock assessment: Compilation of the national catch statistics and observer data as basis for stock assessments in ICES

Population models want to be fed with numbers of fish caught. However, at the landing site the fisher only report the landed weight, not the numbers of landed fish. Our expertise is to convert landing weights of the fisheries into numbers of herring or cod to provide the stock assessment models with the appropriate data feed.

Background and Objective

The Federal Republic of Germany is obliged to collect fisheries data based on the EU regulation 1543/2000 (Data Collection Framework, DCF). This includes the sampling of commercial fisheries, but also the recreational fisheries. In the Baltic Sea region the Thünen Institute of Batlic Sea Fisheries (OF) is responsible to collection the German data, to process them using fisheries biology standards and to transmit the data to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). In the Baltic Sea we collect data from fish stocks used by the German commercial fisheries including the species cod, herring, sprat, flounder, plaice, turbot, dab, salmon and sea trout.

Approach

The Federal Office of Agriculture and Food (BLE) is the national surveillance authority and regularly provides us with logbook data and landing slips. We merge this information with results from our biological sampling from the commercial fisheries. Observers have collected catch and length composition data on board of German commercial fishing vessels; and we analyse unsorted catch samples from the commercial fisheries. In addition, we sample the catches of the marine recreational fisheries.

Preliminary Results

Our quality-approved national fisheries data are regularly transmitted to data bases of ICES (InterCatch, RDBES). Expert groups involving mainly fisheries scientists use these data, e.g. for stock assessment purposes.
