DCF (Data Collection Framework): Data collection for the catch structure of the commercial fisheries on cod, herring, sprat and flatfishes in the Baltic Sea.

Sampling the commercial fisheries of the Baltic Sea is one of our main tasks. For this purpose, our scientific observers regularly go to sea with fishermen to measure the catch on board. On land, we process unsorted catch samples from the fisheries to collect biological parameters like maturity and age.

Background and Objective

Fisheries and catch data are collected for the most important commercially used fish stocks of the Baltic Sea (cod, herring, sprat, flatfishes) within the scope of the German National data collection program. This program is a permanent task, primarily given by the EU regulation 1639/2001 (Data Collection Framework, DCF).

Approach

The population models used for stock assessment require input data such as the number of one-, two-, or three-year-old cod in the landings and discards. Therefore, we need to blend the pure landings data that fishermen record in their logbooks (in kilograms per species per fishing area, quarter, and gear) with biological data that we collect. We obtain these biological data as part of continuous sampling on commercial fishing vessels at sea. We sample both active fisheries (trawl vessels) and passive fisheries (gillnets, longlines, trap nets). On board the fishing vessels, our at-sea observers determine discard rates and length distributions in landings and discards. We use our commercial fishery samples to obtain information on important biological parameters such as weight, sex, maturity and age.
