Carl Bukowski, PhD student at the Thuenen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries, has won the prize for the best poster at the international conference "Fish habitat ecology in a changing climate". The event is organised by the Fisheries Society of the British Isles (FSBI) and took place this year at the University of Essex (Colchester, UK) from 24.07-28.07.2023.
The poster "Heckled by Heat and Hypoxia: temporal habitat loss during summer experienced by Western Baltic Cod" tells the dramatic story of habitat loss for cod in the western Baltic Sea. In late summer, oxygen-poor water layers from the depths expand towards warmed surface water, leaving little room for cod to survive - a finding made under the direction of Dr. Uwe Krumme with the support of Dr. Stefanie Haase, both from the Thuenen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries, in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemuende (IOW). The scientists measured oxygen and water temperature along a typical slope area in the Mecklenburg Bay over 2 years. With the known oxygen and temperature preferences of cod, it was possible to show how deteriorating environmental conditions massively restrict the habitat for cod in late summer.
