In 2022, German agriculture was responsible for the emission of around 53.3 million t of carbon dioxide equivalents (excluding fuel consumption). That is 7.1 percent of German greenhouse gas emissions. The main sources are methane emissions from animal husbandry and nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils.
Compared to the previous year 2021, emissions in 2022 fell by around 1.8 percent. This is primarily a consequence of the further decline in the number of cattle and pigs as well as the reduction in the amounts of synthetic fertilizer applied.
The emission estimate for 2023 results in a total agricultural greenhouse gas emissions of 60.3 million t of CO2 equivalents (52.2 million t of agriculture + 8.1 million t of agricultural fuel consumption) and is below the 67.4 million t of CO2 equivalents permitted according to the adjusted reduction path according to the climate protection law.
