New paper on root and grain yield in winter wheat

Henrike Heinemann et al.: Optimising Root and Grain Yield Through Variety Selection in Winter Wheat Across a European Climate Gradient

A big sampling tour through Europe has now resulted in a paper. We looked at the root biomass, the distribution of roots down to 1m and the root-to-shoot ratios of ten different winter wheat varieties. The eleven trial locations ranged from Spain to Norway.

We found significant differences between varieties in root biomass, root-to-shoot ratios and grain yield. Pedoclimatic conditions determined the relationship's direction between root biomass and grain yield. A site-specific approach is therefore needed to realise the full potential for increased root biomass and yield offered by optimised variety selection.
