A study led by the University of Lausanne in cooperation with the Thünen-Institute (Christopher Poeplau) investigated the effect of the establishment of oil palm plantations on Columbian savanna soils on ecosystem carbon stocks. An additional focus was the variability of soil carbon stocks in the plantations as induced by different management zones. Plantations of various age (8 to 27 years) were evaluated. On average, ecosystem carbon stocks increased by 40 tonnes (33%).
