Liliya Shmyhelska is working on the project "BIOKRAFT - Availability of woody biomass as a raw material for the production of biofuels in Germany and the EU until 2040". Liliya Shmyhelska deals with questions regarding the amount of woody biomass available for biofuel production in Germany and the EU as well as the effect this could have on the transport sector.
On the one hand, the focus of the study is on an ex-post analysis of the availability of raw materials, their utilisation pathways along with the influencing factors in the period from 2000 to 2018. On the other hand, the research aims to understand how the supply and utilisation of woody resources may develop in the future (in the period from 2018 to 2040). For this purpose, Liliya conducts quantitative assessment methods using relevant literature, available statistics and databases as well as results from the WEHAM scenarios project.
Prior to joining Thünen Institute, Liliya Shmyhelska completed her Master's degree in "Sustainable Development" at the University of Leipzig with focuses on "Sustainable Business Management" and "Energy Systems". In her Master's thesis, she researched biomass power plants' purchasing capacity for waste wood after the expiry of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).
