What drives the transformation in our forests? Which factors significantly contribute to changes such as deforestation and reforestation? In a systematic literature review, we analyze relevant research articles published during the last 30 years. Focusing on the most influential socio-economic drivers of global deforestation, we identify more than 150 drivers significantly influencing the forest area under the forest development theories environmental Kuznets curve for deforestation (EKCd) und der forest transition hypothesis (FTH).
Our findings indicate that income, demographics, trade, and institutional factors are among the main drivers of deforestation. The explanatory power of the forest development theories EKCd and FTH remains controversial. By isolating and discussing individual drivers of forest area development, we make a significant contribution to supporting future research and analyzing the global dynamics of forest areas.
