New Project on Regionalisation of Forest Ecosystem Services

The department Forests and Society – Economic Evaluation in cooperation with the Technical University Berlin is taking up a three year project approved by the FNR. It is funded by the BMEL according to a decision by the German Bundestag. The project investigates the valuation of forest ecosystem services and their regional distribution in Germany.

Monetary valuation of the societal benefits of productive, protective and recreational functions is conducted and the regional variation of resulting interdependencies among these benefits is analysed. The outcome of these analyses will be used for a modelling approach and the resulting model will be applied for estimating the potentials for optimizing the benefits from different forest functions as part of a more efficient forest management. Moreover, instruments of forest politics will be revealed for exhausting the optimisation potentials, e.g. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES).
