The official employment statistics are often underreported as many people are involved in a wide range of informal forest economy. Our study addresses this gap by estimating the number of persons in employment and subsistence workers that are not captured in the officially reported statistics, focusing on the forestry and logging sub-sector.

Subsequently, we aggregated our estimates with the recent official employment data to demonstrate an updated overview of the global forest-based employment. Our main finding reveals that at least two-thirds of the total forestry-related employment is informal or subsistence, highly concentrated in developing nations. The size is expected to be more prominent when adding informal and subsistence workforce from the gathering of non-wood forest products and wood-based industrial subsectors.
