Already around 50 countries have formulated policies and strategies to guide the way from a fossil-based economic model to a more sustainable one, namely a bioeconomy. Forests and the forest-based sector play an important role in this economic transformation.
To support the decision making of stakeholders, information on the market supply and demand potentials of various forest-based products and services, their synergies and trade-offs, sectoral impacts, and the role of public policies and private actions are needed.
This special issue resembles examples of the manifold opportunities that the forest-based sector can provide to an emerging bioeconomy from local to global and from firm to world-market levels.
