Paper in New Forests

Planted forests contribute to maximizing timber production but their role as valuable habitat for biodiversity is of increasing concern, particularly in tropical montane cloud forest (TMCF) landscapes, which present extremely high diversity and endemism.

In a recent paper, tree diversity, potential timber productivity and estimated net revenues were compared between monoculture and mixed species plantations in Mexico. The mixed forest only achieved positive revenues with subsidies and an interest rate <5% and 30% harvesting intensity. To ameliorate biobiodiversity loss, TMCF landscapes require alternative measures such as stimulation of the market for native species or compensatory mechanisms for mixed plantations.
