On July 26th, 2017, the project inception event for the BMEL-initiated and financed project „Contribution to close-to-nature private (small scale) forest management and support to the FLEGT-VPA process in Vietnam“, has been held in Hue, Central Vietnam.
The project aims at the motivation of peasant forest owners to shift to longer rotation periods, thus to implement sustainable plantation forestry and to give up the short-rotation business with acacias as they did until now.
Parallel training courses for the anatomic identification of tree species will be provided for governmental officers in charge for timber export issues. This measure shall contribute to a faster implementation of the EU-Action Plan on Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade in the Forestry Sector (FLEGT) and the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA).
Project partners of the Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics and the Institute of Wood Research are the World Wide Fund for Nature - Greater Mekong, the Vietnamese Academy of Forestry and HessenForst.
The Project was authorized by a resolution of the Deutscher Bundestag (German Federal Parliament).
