This year's ERSA Congress will take place from August 26 to 29, 2025 at Panteion University in Athens. The main theme is “Regional Science in Turbulent Times. In search of a resilient, sustainable and inclusive future”.
Together with Lina Bjerke from the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Spatial Economics at Jönköping International Business School and Annekatrin Niebuhr and Duncan Roth from the Institute for Employment Research, Jan Cornelius Peters is organizing a special session on the advantages and disadvantages of agglomeration.
Agglomeration advantages and disadvantages are decisive determinants of the spatial distribution of economic activity. The organized session aims to bring together scholars who are studying the implications of economic activity's spatial concentration due to agglomeration economies or the mechanisms that underlie agglomeration effects.
Both empirical and theoretical submissions pertaining to the spatial concentration of economic activity are welcome, especially those that consider the following aspects within the context of agglomeration:
•    aggregate growth and welfare
•    environmental and health issues
•    left-behind places and social cohesion
•    matching, sharing and learning advantages
•    segregation and polarization
•    spatial sorting and mobility
•    structural change, regional development and resilience.

Contributions examining other topics related to the effects or causes of agglomeration are appreciated as well.

The session description can be downloaded here as a PDF file.
