The transition to greenhouse gas neutrality will affect not only people's lives through increased gasoline and heating costs, but also, for example, through the need for businesses to rapidly adapt new technologies in order to maintain their competitiveness. With regard to rural areas, there is also the question of how specific support policies for rural areas can contribute to achieving climate targets.
In order to address the variety of aspects, we are investigating in the project "Greenhouse Gas Neutral Germany: Effects on the Economy and Living Conditions in Rural Areas" (TREND:LR) together with the Thünen Institute of Rural Studies the impacts of the transition to greenhouse gas neutrality on living conditions and the economy in rural areas as well as the climate protection contribution of specific support instruments of Integrated Rural Development. Based on a review of scientific literature and policy strategies, social and economic challenges of the transition will first be identified. How these can be addressed by politics will then be discussed with representatives from science and practice in workshops.
