Damiaan Persyn and co-authors from Spain and Italy investigate the impact of transport infrastructure on regional economic growth in a study published in Regional Studies. The study examines the effects of large investment projects in road transport infrastructure on economic growth. To do so, the authors developed a stylized "structural gravity model" that maps the economic structure and trade within the EU at the NUTS-2 regional level. The results show that investments in economically weaker regions of Eastern Europe pay off within just a few years. Moreover, limited positive spillover effects from these investments are observed in neighboring regions, such as parts of Eastern Germany.
