This study, published in the journal Research Policy, examines the role of personality traits for regional innovativeness. The researchers find that only the trait extraversion affects patenting in German regions. This effect is particularly pronounced in structurally weak regions.

It is argued that extraversion increases the connectivity of innovation systems in structurally weak regions by enhancing communication, knowledge exchange, and collaboration both within and between regions. Strong networks may therefore serve as a compensatory mechanism for a lack of R&D investments in structurally weak regions.

Innovation policies for structurally weak regions should therefore go beyond a narrow R&D focus and need to consider the interactive component of innovation activities in this type of region.
