Interdisciplinary exchange of doctoral students in Rural Studies

More than 20 young researchers from all over Germany participated in the PhD Workshop Rural Studies 2021 on September 8 and 9, 2021. The PhD students exchanged ideas on current qualitative research approaches on the topic of "everyday life and tensions in rural areas".

From a variety of disciplinary backgrounds - from sociology and geography to communication and sports sciences - a wide range of questions were discussed, for example: How does the establishment of a communication app affect community processes in villages? What are the effects of bioeconomic restructuring in rural Finland? Do people in rural areas feel 'left behind'? Which biographical decision-making processes between leaving or staying do women who have always lived in rural areas go through?

The workshop was organized by Melanie Rühmling and Sara Schiemann from the Rostock Institute for Social Research and Social Practice e. V. and Susann Bischof and Larissa Deppisch from the Thünen Institute of Rural Studies. The event took place at the Thünen Institute of Rural Studies in Braunschweig. It was supported by the Section Rural Sociology of the German Sociological Association whose spokespersons also participated in the workshop.

The abstracts of all contributions can be found in the program booklet. A more detailed event report from the perspective of the participants will be published soon in the journal of the German Sociological Association ("Soziologie"). There will be a digital follow-up event in March 2022 to perpetuate the collaboration on issues of qualitative social research in rural areas.
