As part of the EU Data Collection Framework (DCF), each Member State is obliged to collect a wide range of economic data of its fishing fleet.

Background and Objective

Based on the Regulation 2017/1004 of the European Parliament and of the Council, each Member State is obliged to collect a range of economic data of the national fishing fleet. As an annual monitoring, these data help describing the economic situation of different fisheries. Moreover, they are crucial for recognising trends and for analysing the impact of political measures.

Target Group

EU Commission, research institutions, fishing industry, policy consultation

Approach

One part of the cost data of fishing enterprises is being collected directly using questionnaires. Another part is derived from the Accountants' Network of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Fleet register, logbooks and sales statistics are provided through the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food and serve as additional data sources. Through a combination of all these data, figures are derived which are to be provided under the aforementioned EU legislation.

Our Research Questions

  • To what extent are individual segments of the German fleet affected by changes in fuel costs?
  • What are the structural challenges facing the German fishing industry?
  • What are the economic consequences of climate change for the German fishing fleet?
