White rot damage of playground equipment caused by Perenniporia meridionalis

In the recent past, the little-known fungus Perenniporia meridionalis has been increasingly associated with damage on construction timber. A laboratory experiment was carried out to investigate the previously its unknown degradation ability. It was found that the white rot fungus is able to degrade beech and oak wood to a comparable or even greater extent than Trametes versicolor, which is one of the test fungi used to determine the durability of timber (EN 113-2).  Black locust wood was degraded comparatively slowly.
