As part of the "Bio-based packaging" seminar series organized by the German Agency for Sustainable Raw Materials (FNR), Dr. Fokko Schütt will be presenting the results of a research project dedicated to the environmentally friendly production of reinforcing fibres for packaging paper containing waste paper on Tuesday, 14 May.
In order to maintain quality standards and produce more sustainably, many paper manufacturers are looking for alternative raw materials. The Thünen Institute of Wood Research has optimized pulping processes that enable manufacturers to produce their own fibres from straw or grasses in their paper mills and use them in their products. In the process, which has not yet been used industrially, straw or other non-wood raw materials are boiled with aqueous solutions of sodium carbonate, an inexpensive, easy-to-handle and easily recoverable chemical, or steam treated after pre-impregnation with the chemicals.
The process development enables paper manufacturers to produce reinforcing fibers directly on site and use them for their own paper production. Thus, regional concepts can be developed and implemented in which short transport routes and optimum utilization of raw materials lead to a sustainable overall concept.
Dr. Fokko Schütt will present an overview of the results of the project online on May 14 as part of the FNR seminar series “Bio-based packaging”. Interested parties are invited to register for the event free of charge on the FNR website: https://veranstaltungen.fnr.de/biobasierte-verpackungen2024/programmueberblick/papier (presentation will be given in German language)
Further details on the results were also recently published in a special issue of the journal Clean Technologies.
