Wood anatomy at the ”Woche der Umwelt“

Every four years, when the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany and the DBU invite people to the "Woche der Umwelt", an independent jury selects the exhibitors - and Wood Anatomy was there!

At the exhibition stand in the park of Bellevue Palace, guests were given a live demonstration of the identification of solid wood, charcoal and paper using two microscopes and currently developed AI systems. The apps for the macroscopic identification of solid wood met with great interest.
These support customs officials, buyers of commercial goods or even interested non-experts in the initial verification of the type of wood. Among other things, it is possible to clarify whether a species protected under the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is present.
The identification of charcoal species shows the enormous influence that the investigations carried out at the Thünen Institute of Wood Research have on the international charcoal trade.
Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM), the development of digital image recognition systems for the automation of wood species identification in paper using artificial intelligence was presented. Paper specimens were shown on the microscope at the stand and the AI systems were demonstrated on the computer.
