The Human Health and Consumer Protection working group of the Thuenen Institute of Wood Research, worked on a new method for determining terpene emissions from wood.
The innovative approach utilized near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) in combination with statistical models to measure terpene emissions more quickly and efficiently. A clear correlation was found between the NIR spectra and the emissions of α-pinene and 3-carene. Prediction models demonstrated high accuracy, with a determination coefficient of 0.77 and a deviation of only 12%. This method could be used in the future to identify woods with high emissions at an early stage and better control emissions – with significant time savings compared to the standard measurement method.
