The Institute of Forestry of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Hamburg-Bergedorf is looking for the following full-time position as soon as possible, limited until 31.10.2024
Scientist (f/m/d)
(Forest Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences or related disciplines
for the research project "Establishment of a systematic monitoring of the bioeconomy ".
The position is located in the research unit Forest and Society. In the two sub-areas of economic valuation and sustainability assessment, we conduct economic evaluation and sustainability assessments of forests. We analyze and assess cost and benefits as well as sustainability of the forest’s services. The Thünen Institute is a federal research institute in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) with the task of developing scientific decision-making aids for politics and expanding the scientific horizon of knowledge for the benefit of the common good.
In the above-mentioned project, commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and funded by the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), the foundations for a Germany-wide monitoring system of current and future biomass flows and their evaluation are to be further developed. The resource base (biomass utilization/biomass potential) as well as the path of biomass to the broad spectrum of end uses will be recorded. The concept developed in the completed project 'Monitoring of the Bioeconomy: Resource Base and Sustainability - Biomass Production' (MoBi I) will be refined and supplemented by additional monitoring components. Tasks:
- Update and continuation of the quantification of sustainability effects of bio-based material flows and on a sectoral level
- Analysis and processing of information on sustainability effects of import commodities
- Joint development of a concept to simultaneously link information on sustainability effects and traceability of import commodities
- Preparation of project reports and scientific publications
- Presentation of methodology and results at national and international conferences
Professional Profile:
- Good to very good university degree (Univ. diploma or M.Sc.) in forest sciences, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences or related disciplines
- Very good knowledge of sustainability assessment methods and their application
- Good knowledge of production, trade, environmental and energy statistics
- Confident use of Office Software
- Experience with writing scientific publications
Personal profile:
- Independent, goal-oriented approach of working
- Ability to present research results in an understandable way for different stakeholder groups
- Ability to work in a team and very good communication skills
- Very good German and English language skills, both written and spoken
- Willingness to travel on business
