Overview

Our research in the Thünen topic "Renewable Resources and Wood" is broadly diversified. The activities can be assigned to three focal points:

  • Raw materials and material quality: monitoring the bioeconomy; making better use of calamity wood and hardwood; characterizing material properties
  • From raw material to product: biobased products from the biorefinery; material efficiency and circular economy
  • Product quality, consumer protection and society: assess emissions; conduct life cycle assessments; support Charta für Holz 2.0

Bio-refinery processes for chemical products

The efficient production of bio-based chemicals and products in bio-refineries is one of the central challenges of the bioeconomy. We develop and evaluate different biological refinery processes for agricultural and forest raw materials.

Bio-based polymers and materials

Without synthetic polymers, our lives would be hard to imagine. We evaluate and develop sustainable and bio-based alternatives for applications such as adhesives, fiber composites, polyurethane foams and wood-polymer materials.

Biorefinery processes

We are working on strategies for the complete utilization of renewable resources for the production of platform chemicals and energy. In this context it is particularly significant to develop chemical and thermo-chemical pretreatment and pulping ...

Wood resource monitoring

Wood is one of the most important renewable resources in Germany. But who uses this resource? How is the supply of the different assortments? Available statistics do show considerable gaps of information.

Bioeconomy

Bioeconomy is considered to have a significant potential in the transformation towards a more sustainable circular economy. A monitoring system is needed to assess the opportunities and risks.

Biotechnical and chemical conversion processes

Chemical products can be produced not only from crude oil but also from biomass. To do so, however, they have to be biotechnologically and/or chemically converted and further processed. At the Thünen Institute, we are working to develop and evaluate ...

Scenarios for a bio-based future

With the help of models, we analyse how a bio-based economy can develop in the future. In addition, we investigate the social demands and expectations placed on the bioeconomy.
